A short and sweet assignment designed with tweens in mind to help them internalize and benefit from Come Follow Me in 2019.
Come Follow Me for Tweens

There are many valuable resources available to help you customize the Come Follow Me program to meet the needs of your family. Since half of my children at this point would be considered “tweens,” I have been giving my 9-12 year-year-olds an “assignment” each week.
These assignments are intended to help them become familiar with the scriptures including Joseph Smith Translation, the Come Follow Me manual, and talks given by General Authorities.
I try to keep it simple and “easy,” while focusing on important truths and drafting the questions in such a way that they will become confident in their abilities to find answers in the scriptures and other resources provided to them. I don’t pretend to be perfect, but this is how I have felt inspired to help my “tweens” benefit from the Come Follow Me Program.
Assignment
This week, we wanted to emphasize with all of our children the importance of listening to General Conference and especially that of having a living prophet. We talked about paying attention to promises that our prophet makes and that when President Nelson is speaking, that it is the same thing as if Heavenly Father is speaking.

We used this talk from last October’s conference. I asked each of my appropriately aged children, my husband, and myself to read through this (shorter) talk. The assignment is:
Look through the talk and find 1 or 2 promises or blessings that President Nelson gives us. Be ready to discuss the promise and what our part of the deal is.
Every promise that is given is contingent on our doing something first. If we fulfill our part, we can know that Heavenly Father will ALWAYS fulfill his.
We had a great discussion and each of our children had chosen a different promise (our 11-year-old chose 2, just to be sure that he would have one that wasn’t touched on).
Possible Answers and Discussion
Here are some of the promises that President Nelson gave in last Conference:
- I promise that as you diligently work to remodel your home into a center of gospel learning, over time your Sabbath days will truly be a delight. Your children will be excited to learn and to live the Savior’s teachings, and the influence of the adversary in your life and in your home will decrease. Changes in your family will be dramatic and sustaining.
- I promise you that our rigorous attention to use the correct name of the Savior’s Church and its members will lead to increased faith and access to greater spiritual power for members of His Church.
- I promise you that the Lord will bring the miracles He knows you need as you make sacrifices to serve and worship in His temples.
Now this talk is full of inspiration and “quote worthy quotes.” It was enlightening for me to read through it again and remember how inspired our dear prophet is. My purpose in giving this assignment is to get my children reading the words of a prophet and hopefully feel the spirit witness to them that he is a prophet of God.
